Winter is Fun!


Winter activities are great for all ages. The thing to remember is to wear the right gear and prepare by fueling your body with healthy fats to stay warm. There is so much to do in DeKalb County! We hope you take advantage of the beauty and activities of the winter season.

  • Winter Fest at Russell Woods Saturday, January 20

  • Cross Country Ski Clinic with NIU Outdoor Adventures Sunday, January 28, 3-4:30 p.m. through Sycamore Park District

  • Learn to Snowboard Clinics with NIU Outdoor Adventures at Sycamore Park District Sunday, January 28 or Sunday, February 4 and at DeKalb Park District Sunday, February 18, 11 a.m., 12 p.m. or 1 p.m. lessons available.

  • Polar Palooza at DeKalb Park District Saturday, February 3

  • Build snow people and animals-make a few ‘cups’ and fill with bird seed

  • Create temporary art with whatever you find on the ground

  • Save those squeeze bottles to make colorful snow art


Enjoy some time to be cozy, too

  • Discover Hygge: ‘creating a warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with good people’

  • Make hot cocoa and add a twist: candy cane? Cinnamon stick? Make it with coconut milk and orange zest? Spicy-Mexican hot chocolate!

  • Pick a day for pajamas and games(or all day!) everyone chooses a game and a favorite snack, too

  • Check out your library for cozy indoor activities!

  • Pick up a new or old hobby

  • Pick a book to read together

  • Check out a STEM kit from your library and explore it with your family

  • Have an indoor picnic

  • Create and play in a family sized fort or make an indoor obstacle course

  • Family dance party

  • Try out a new to you recipe or bake something you usually buy like crackers 

  • Celebrate the Lunar New Year beginning Saturday February 10 with year of the Dragon 

  • Cozy up with a new to you tradition or create something new like "Caturdays" instead of Saturday!
